Gas Line Replacement/Upgrade in Albuquerque, NM
Sometimes the problem isn’t one appliance, it’s the line itself — old black iron pipe rusting from the inside, or a system that was sized decades ago and just can’t carry what a modern house actually needs anymore. That’s a different job than connecting a new range, and it’s one Jonathan and the crew handle as part of our gas line services across Albuquerque: figuring out whether you need a section replaced, the whole line replaced, or the whole system upgraded to carry more gas without tearing every wall open to do it.

Johnathon arrived as scheduled. He had taken a diligent approach about ordering the replacement part we needed. It took a few days to get here. No one had it in stock. The part was top-of-the-line brass to replace an inexpensive cheap cartridge in our shower. Johnathon did the Job in an efficient manner and checked everything when finished to make sure it all properly functioned as designed. Our shower area was left, clean and neat As it was when he got here. Great job, JohnathonPosted on Google![]()

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ J&J Plumbing deserves 5 stars! I started out thinking, “How hard can replacing a toilet be?” Famous last words. After two trips to the toilet aisle, I discovered my plumbing knowledge was about as accurate as my original guess — I needed a 10-inch rough-in, not a 12-inch! At that point, I knew I was in trouble. I called three other plumbing companies, and they all said they could maybe come out in 3–4 days. Meanwhile, my toilet was basically trying to become an indoor fountain. J&J came out quickly, ready to help, and saved me from turning a simple project into a full-blown plumbing adventure. Their advice, experience, and quick response were exactly what I needed. Great people, great service, and I’m grateful they were there before my DIY project became a “call the insurance company” story. Your Gas Line Is Original Black Iron and It’s Starting to Show Its Age
Black iron pipe — the older threaded steel gas line a lot of Albuquerque houses still run — doesn’t fail all at once. It rusts from the inside at the threaded joints first, where the thread sealant’s been holding a seal for decades, and once that seal starts going, you’re looking at a slow leak long before anyone smells anything obvious.
You’re Adding Several Appliances at Once and the Existing Line Can’t Cover It All
One new appliance is usually just a hookup. Adding a range upgrade, a gas dryer, a pool heater, and a generator all in the same year is a different question entirely — that’s total BTU load stacking up on a line that was probably sized for a third of what you’re about to ask it to carry.
Building an Addition or a Casita That Needs Its Own Gas Run
A new structure or a significant addition sometimes means running an entirely new branch off the main line rather than tapping into whatever’s already feeding the house, especially if the existing line’s already near its limit.
An Inspection or Insurance Review Flagged Old Fittings
Home sales and insurance renewals sometimes surface this one — an inspector notes original flare fittings or unlisted connectors that were fine when installed but don’t meet current code, and now it’s a requirement instead of a someday project.
What Actually Determines Replace vs. Upgrade
Corrosion at threaded joints is the main reason black iron gets replaced outright rather than patched. Once rust starts eating a joint from the inside, cutting out and re-threading that one section just moves the weak point a few inches over — the pipe around it is aging the same way.
Pipe sizing comes down to total BTU load and the length of the run — the farther gas has to travel and the more appliances pulling from the same line, the bigger the pipe has to be to keep enough pressure at the far end. A line that was fine for a stove and a water heater in 1975 often doesn’t have the capacity for a modern kitchen, a couple of gas fireplaces, and an outdoor kitchen all pulling at once.
For bigger capacity needs, sometimes the answer isn’t just larger pipe — it’s a 2-psi system, where the gas utility feeds the house at a higher pressure than the old standard, and a regulator at the meter steps it down to a manifold that branches out to each appliance with its own smaller regulator. That setup can carry more total gas through smaller-diameter pipe than a standard low-pressure system, which matters if you’re trying to avoid ripping out finished walls to fit a bigger line. It’s not the right call for every house, but it’s worth knowing it exists before assuming a full-size pipe upgrade is the only option.
How We Actually Handle a Replacement or Upgrade
We start by mapping what’s there now — material, age, size, and everything currently connected to it — and add up what you actually want it to carry, including anything you’re planning down the road, not just what’s hooked up today. From there it’s a real conversation about whether this is a section replacement, a full line replacement, or a capacity upgrade, and what each one actually costs versus what it buys you.
Any work on the line itself gets pressure-tested before anything’s connected back to it, and depending on scope, the gas utility may need to be involved for a meter or service line change, since that part belongs to them, not us — we’ll coordinate that timing so it’s not a surprise delay.
The mistake we see most: someone upgrades one appliance at a time over several years, each time on the assumption the existing line’s fine, until the fourth appliance finally reveals it never was. Planning the whole load at once, even if the work happens in stages, avoids paying for the same diagnosis three separate times.
What surprises people is how often the fix isn’t bigger pipe at all — it’s the 2-psi setup described above, which solves a capacity problem without the wall damage a full-size pipe replacement would otherwise require.
One Thing Worth Locking Down Before We Show Up
Make a real list of every appliance you want gas to eventually feed — not just what’s installed now, but the pool heater you’re planning for next summer or the generator you’ve been meaning to add. Sizing the new line for that full list the first time is a lot cheaper than upsizing again in three years because nobody mentioned the generator.
Just Adding One Appliance and the Line’s Fine? That’s a Different Page
If you’re connecting a single new appliance and there’s no reason to think the existing line can’t handle it, that’s gas appliance hookups, not a replacement or upgrade — a faster, cheaper job. And if you’ve never had gas service to the property at all, that’s a gas installation instead, bringing gas in for the first time rather than replacing or upsizing what’s already there.
Already Repiping the House for Water? Ask About the Gas Line Too
If you’re having us out for a whole-home repipe because the water lines are old enough to be failing, the gas line’s often sitting at close to the same age, sometimes original to the house. Worth having us look at both while we’re already there instead of finding out about the gas line separately a year later.
Smell Gas Right Now? Stop and Get Everyone Out
That’s not a scheduled replacement conversation — get everyone outside, don’t touch a light switch or anything electric on your way out, and call New Mexico Gas Company or 911 before you call us. Gas leak repair is the page for the immediate problem; a line replacement or upgrade is the longer-term fix that can wait until the leak itself is handled safely.
Common Questions Before You Call
Does the gas utility need to get involved, or is this all on you?
Depends on scope. Work on the line inside your property is ours. Anything touching the meter or the service line coming in from the street belongs to the utility, and we’ll coordinate that timing so it doesn’t hold up the job.
How long does a full line replacement take?
A single-section replacement might be a day. A whole-house replacement or a full capacity upgrade runs longer, especially if walls need to be opened, and we’ll give you a real number once we’ve mapped the existing system.
Can you reuse the existing path, or does new pipe mean new routing?
Sometimes we can follow the same path. Sometimes the old routing doesn’t work for a bigger pipe or a 2-psi manifold setup, and rerouting is part of the job. We’ll walk you through it before any wall gets opened.
Do older homes near Old Town or Barelas typically need this more than newer construction?
Often, yes — original black iron that’s never been touched tends to show up more in older, established parts of town, simply because the pipe’s had more decades to age. Newer construction usually has line capacity built in from the start, though it’s not universal either way.

Ready to Find Out What Your Line Actually Needs
Call J&J Plumbing and we’ll map your existing system, tell you honestly whether it’s a section replacement, a full replacement, or a capacity upgrade, and give you a real number before anything gets cut. We’ve handled this in older homes near Old Town and Barelas running original black iron, and in newer builds out in Rio Rancho, the Westside, and Northeast Heights where the question is usually capacity for what’s being added, not age.
