Open the Faucet Connected to the Frozen Pipe
Turn it on, even if nothing comes out yet. A trickle helps relieve pressure in the line and helps the thaw work from both directions once heat gets applied.
Never Use an Open Flame to Thaw a Pipe
No propane torch, no lighter, nothing with a flame anywhere near it. That’s a real fire risk, especially inside a wall or a tight crawlspace, and it’s not worth it.
Apply Gentle Heat Starting Nearest the Faucet
A hair dryer, an electric heating pad, or towels soaked in warm water all work. Start at the end closest to the open faucet and work toward the blockage — heating the middle of a frozen section first can trap pressure between two ice plugs.
See Water Where It Shouldn’t Be, or Hear Hissing? Shut Off the Main and Call Now
That means it’s already split, not just frozen. Shut off the main water valve and stop trying to thaw it — at that point it’s a burst pipe, not a frozen one, and the steps are different.
Can’t Find the Frozen Section? Don’t Keep Guessing
Call us instead of working room to room on a hunch. We’ll help you narrow it down over the phone or get there and find it fast.
Why Pipes Freeze Here Even Though Winters Aren’t Brutal
Albuquerque doesn’t get the kind of sustained deep freeze some places do, and that’s actually part of the problem — homes here aren’t always built assuming pipes need serious protection, so a single hard-freeze night catches exposed lines that were never insulated for it in the first place. The pipe doesn’t need weeks of cold, just one night in an unheated space when the temperature drops enough.
The pipes that freeze first are almost always the ones running through spaces that aren’t heated the same way living areas are — a crawlspace, an attic, a garage, or an exterior wall that doesn’t get much residual warmth from the rest of the house. Outdoor hose bibs are usually the very first thing to go, since they’re sitting right at the edge of the house with nothing but a wall between them and the cold.
How We Actually Handle a Winterization Visit
We walk the house looking specifically at what’s exposed — crawlspace, attic, garage, any exterior wall run we can access — and insulate or protect whatever’s vulnerable. On lines that see repeat freeze risk, heat tape — an electrical cable that wraps around the pipe and keeps it just above freezing — is sometimes the right call, but it has to be rated for the application and installed correctly, since a bad heat tape job is its own fire risk.
The mistake we see most: someone insulates the obvious pipe run in the garage and misses the one hose bib around back that freezes every single year anyway. What surprises people is how often the fix is genuinely cheap — foam insulation and an hour of labor — compared to what a single burst pipe from the same spot would’ve cost.
A frost-free hose bib is worth mentioning here too — it’s built with the actual shutoff valve set back inside the warm part of the wall instead of right at the spigot, so even though the visible part sits outside, the part that could freeze and split is protected. Swapping an old standard bib for a frost-free one is a small job that solves a recurring problem for good, rather than insulating around the same weak point every year.
One Frozen Pipe This Winter, or a Repeat Problem Every Year?
A single cold snap catching an uninsulated section is usually a straightforward fix — insulate it, maybe add heat tape, done. If the same section freezes every winter no matter what’s been tried, that’s sometimes a routing problem more than an insulation problem, and if it’s tangled up with an old system that’s due for other work anyway, that’s worth a real conversation about whole-home repiping rather than insulating the same weak point year after year.
This Covers Pipes and Faucets, Not the Rest of Your Home
Winterizing your plumbing means the pipes, hose bibs, and exposed lines — it doesn’t cover sealing windows, checking your furnace, or the rest of general home winterizing. We’ll flag anything plumbing-related we see, but the broader home prep is outside our lane.
Disconnect and Drain Outdoor Hoses Before the First Freeze
A hose left connected traps water in the bib behind it, and that’s usually the first thing to crack each winter. Disconnect it, drain it, and store it before the first hard freeze, not after.
Insulate Exposed Pipe in the Crawlspace, Attic, and Garage
Foam pipe insulation is cheap and it’s the single biggest thing that keeps a mild cold snap from turning into a repair call. Anywhere you can see bare pipe in an unheated space is a candidate.
Let Vulnerable Faucets Drip on the Coldest Nights
A slow drip keeps water moving, and moving water is much harder to freeze solid than water sitting still in the line. This isn’t something to do every night all winter, just on the nights actually forecast to hit a hard freeze.
Know Where Your Main Shutoff Is Before Winter, Not During It
Same advice we’d give for any emergency — find it now, while nothing’s wrong, so you’re not searching for it with water already running somewhere it shouldn’t be.
Common Questions Before You Call
How long does it actually take a frozen pipe to burst?
There’s no fixed timeline — it depends on how cold it gets and how long the pipe stays frozen. That’s exactly why we don’t recommend waiting to see what happens.
Should I leave faucets dripping all winter, or just on the coldest nights?
Just the nights genuinely forecast to hit a hard freeze. Dripping all winter isn’t necessary here and just wastes water on the mild nights, which is most of them.
Does this happen more in some homes than others?
Homes with crawlspaces or older construction — more common in established areas like North Valley, Uptown, and Downtown — tend to have more exposed pipe runs than newer slab-built homes out in Rio Rancho or the Westside, where current code generally keeps more of the plumbing protected from the start. Neither is immune, but the risk isn’t identical.
Can I use a space heater instead of a hair dryer to thaw a pipe?
Only if you can keep it a safe distance away and never leave it unattended. We’d rather you call us than improvise with something that can start a fire if it tips or overheats.
