Gas Appliance Hookups in Albuquerque, NM
Getting a new range, dryer, water heater, or fire pit connected to gas the right way is exactly the kind of call Jonathan and the crew handle constantly as part of our gas line services across Albuquerque. Connect it wrong and you’ve either got an appliance that won’t light right, or a leak waiting to happen behind a stove nobody’s pulled out in years. We test every connection before we leave, so you’re not finding out the hard way.

Installing a New Gas Range or Cooktop
A new range usually means a new flex connector — the flexible metal line that runs from the wall valve to the appliance — since code doesn’t let us reuse the old one from the last stove. It also means checking that the existing shutoff valve still turns freely; a lot of them haven’t been touched in a decade and seize up right when you need them.
Hooking Up a Gas Dryer
Same idea, different appliance. A gas dryer needs its own dedicated connector and shutoff, and if the laundry room’s never had a gas dryer before, that’s not a hookup, that’s a new line — a different job we’ll walk you through separately.
Adding a Gas Water Heater Where There Wasn’t One
Converting from electric to gas, or adding a gas unit somewhere new, means running a line to a spot that’s never had one, sizing it for the water heater’s BTU draw, and venting it correctly. That’s more involved than a straight hookup, and we’ll tell you that upfront rather than quote it like a simple connection.
Outdoor Gas — Fire Pits, Grills, and Patio Heaters
Outdoor gas runs need their own shutoff too, buried or accessible depending on where it sits in the yard, and they need to be rated for exposure to weather, not just whatever fitting was lying around the garage.
What Actually Has to Be Right for a Hookup to Be Safe
Every gas appliance needs its own shutoff valve — a quarter-turn valve right at the appliance, so the next repair or disconnect doesn’t mean shutting off gas to the whole house. A lot of older homes are missing these entirely, especially on appliances that have been in place since the house was built.
Most gas appliances also need a sediment trap — sometimes called a drip leg — a short vertical piece of pipe that hangs down before the gas line reaches the appliance’s own valve. It catches moisture and debris before they can reach the burner or valve assembly, and skipping it is one of the more common code violations we catch on older hookups nobody’s touched in years.
Pipe sizing matters more than people expect. Every appliance has a BTU rating — basically how much gas it needs to burn at full output — and the line feeding it has to be sized for that load. Swap a standard range for a high-output professional-style range, or add an appliance onto a line that’s already feeding two or three others, and the existing pipe might not move enough gas to run everything at once. That’s not a hookup problem anymore, that’s a line-sizing problem, and it’s worth knowing before the new range shows up on install day.
We use gas-rated pipe dope — yellow, specifically rated for gas connections, not the same compound used on a water line — on every threaded joint, and every new connection gets pressure-tested with a soap solution before we call the appliance ready to use. If bubbles show up anywhere, it gets fixed before the gas gets turned back on, not after.
How We Actually Handle a Hookup
We check the existing line size and what else it’s already feeding before connecting anything new — that tells us in a few minutes whether the appliance you bought is going to get the gas flow it needs. We install or replace the shutoff and sediment trap if either’s missing or outdated, connect with a new listed flex connector sized for the appliance, and pressure-test the whole connection with a soap solution before we consider the job done.
The mistake we see most: someone reuses the old flex connector from whatever appliance used to sit there, because it “looks fine.” Flex connectors corrode and crack at the fittings from the inside out, where you can’t see it, and code requires a new one matched to the new appliance regardless of how the old one looks.
What surprises people most is finding out the existing line’s too small for what they just bought. A bigger, higher-output range or an added appliance can push past what the current line was ever sized to carry, and at that point the fix isn’t the hookup — it’s upsizing the line itself, which is a bigger conversation than swapping a connector.
One Thing Worth Checking Before We Show Up
Have the appliance’s spec sheet or BTU rating on hand before hookup day, especially if you’re upgrading to something bigger or more powerful than what used to be there. That one number tells us whether the existing line’s going to be enough or whether we need to talk about upsizing it first.
No Existing Line There at All? That’s Not a Hookup, That’s an Installation
If the appliance is going somewhere that’s never had gas before — a new spot for a range, a laundry room that’s always run electric, an outdoor kitchen starting from scratch — that’s gas installation, not an appliance hookup. We’ll tell you which one you’re actually looking at before we quote it. And if you’re mid-build and want gas stubbed out for future appliances before the walls close, that’s part of new construction rough-in, planned ahead of time instead of added after the fact.
Smell Gas Right Now? Stop and Get Everyone Out
That’s not a hookup problem to schedule around. Get everyone out of the house, don’t flip any light switches or use anything electric on your way out, and call New Mexico Gas Company or 911 from outside before you call us. Once it’s safe, gas leak repair is the page for getting the actual problem fixed — a hookup appointment isn’t the right call when there’s already a leak in the air.
Common Questions Before You Call
Do you supply the appliance, or just connect it?
Just the connection. You buy the range, dryer, water heater, or fire pit — we handle the gas line, the shutoff, the connector, and testing it before we leave.
Can my existing line handle a bigger or higher-output appliance?
Sometimes, sometimes not. It depends on what else that line’s already feeding and how it was originally sized. We’ll check before you install anything, not after it’s sitting in your kitchen unconnected.
Do you pull a permit for a gas appliance hookup?
Straightforward swaps of an existing appliance usually don’t need one. Adding gas somewhere new, or anything involving line sizing changes, typically does — we’ll tell you which applies before we start.
What if I smell gas right after a new hookup?
Get out, don’t use anything electric, and call New Mexico Gas Company or 911 first. Then call us. We’ll come back out and make it right, but the gas company’s the one who needs to know first if there’s an active leak.
