Johnathon arrived as scheduled. He had taken a diligent approach about ordering the replacement part we needed. It took a few days to get here. No one had it in stock. The part was top-of-the-line brass to replace an inexpensive cheap cartridge in our shower. Johnathon did the Job in an efficient manner and checked everything when finished to make sure it all properly functioned as designed. Our shower area was left, clean and neat As it was when he got here. Great job, Johnathon

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ J&J Plumbing deserves 5 stars! I started out thinking, “How hard can replacing a toilet be?” Famous last words. After two trips to the toilet aisle, I discovered my plumbing knowledge was about as accurate as my original guess — I needed a 10-inch rough-in, not a 12-inch! At that point, I knew I was in trouble. I called three other plumbing companies, and they all said they could maybe come out in 3–4 days. Meanwhile, my toilet was basically trying to become an indoor fountain. J&J came out quickly, ready to help, and saved me from turning a simple project into a full-blown plumbing adventure. Their advice, experience, and quick response were exactly what I needed. Great people, great service, and I’m grateful they were there before my DIY project became a “call the insurance company” story. Highly recommend J&J Plumbing!

You Never Use the Tub, and It’s Just Taking Up Space

If the tub’s been sitting unused for years while everyone in the house showers, converting it turns wasted square footage into a bathroom that actually matches how you live.

Getting In and Out of the Tub Has Gotten Harder

A step-free shower is genuinely safer for anyone dealing with mobility concerns, and it doesn’t have to look clinical or institutional to get there — modern conversions can look just as good as any standard shower remodel.

The Tub Itself Is Old, Cracked, or Just Hard to Keep Clean

An aging tub that’s chipped, stained, or developed cracks in the finish is often more trouble to maintain than it’s worth, especially if nobody’s actually bathing in it.

You’re Trying to Modernize a Dated Bathroom

A tub-to-shower conversion is one of the more noticeable upgrades you can make to an older bathroom without a full gut renovation of the whole room.

You Want a Bigger, More Open Shower Without Expanding the Room

Converting the existing tub footprint into a shower often gives you significantly more usable shower space than the shower-tub combo that was there before, without touching the walls.

Bathtub Plumbing in Albuquerque, NM

What’s Actually Involved in a Conversion

It starts with removing the old tub, which sounds simple but often uncovers what we’re really working with underneath — plumbing that hasn’t been touched since the house was built, sometimes rerouted awkwardly by a previous repair. Tub drains and shower drains aren’t always interchangeable either. A tub drain typically runs a smaller diameter than what code requires for a shower drain, and depending on how the original plumbing was laid out, that sometimes means the drain line itself needs to be resized or repositioned, not just capped off and reused.

Waterproofing is the other piece people underestimate. A shower pan needs proper slope toward the drain and a waterproof membrane underneath the finished surface — skip either one and you’re looking at water finding its way into the subfloor over time, which is a much bigger problem than the conversion was ever meant to create. We set the pan, confirm slope and drainage are correct, and connect the new shower valve and fixtures before any finish work goes on top.

The mistake we see a lot: homeowners or even some contractors assuming the existing tub drain plumbing can just be reused as-is for the new shower, when the sizing or positioning genuinely doesn’t meet what a proper shower installation needs. Skipping that step now means a drainage problem showing up later, once everything’s finished and tiled over.

What surprises people most is how much better a step-free, low-threshold conversion can look compared to what they picture — a lot of people assume “accessible” means clinical, and a well-done conversion looks like a completely standard, modern shower that just happens to also be safer to use.

We do a lot of these conversions in North Valley, often in multi-generational households where one bathroom needs to work for both older and younger family members living under the same roof — a step-free shower solves that without needing a second bathroom built from scratch.

Do I Need a Full Remodel, or Would a Repair Handle This?

If the tub’s structurally sound and the actual complaint is cosmetic — an outdated look, a worn finish — sometimes a straightforward Shower Installation & Repair or a refinish solves it without the cost of a full conversion. Conversion makes the most sense when the tub genuinely isn’t being used, mobility is a real concern, or the layout itself needs to change. We’ll tell you honestly which situation you’re in rather than pushing the bigger job by default.

If you’re weighing this as part of a larger bathroom update rather than just the tub, it’s worth looking at our full Bathroom Renovator work too, since a conversion is sometimes one piece of a broader remodel rather than a standalone project.

What Can I Check or Plan Before Calling?

Measuring your existing tub alcove and taking a few photos of the current layout gives us a head start on talking through options before we’re even out for a visit — it’s genuinely useful information and something you can do yourself with a tape measure. Past that, this isn’t a DIY project. Between the drain work, the waterproofing, and the plumbing connections, getting any one piece wrong creates problems that are expensive to fix once tile and finish work are already in place.

Will This Take a Long Time, or Leave Me Without a Shower?

Depends on the scope, but a straightforward conversion is usually a matter of days rather than weeks, and we’ll walk you through the realistic timeline for your specific bathroom before work starts. If it’s your only bathroom, we’ll talk through how to manage that gap ahead of time rather than surprising you with it mid-project.

Does This Work in a Small Bathroom?

Often, yes — a lot of tub-to-shower conversions actually free up usable space rather than needing more of it, since you’re working within the existing tub footprint rather than expanding the room.

Will Removing My Only Tub Hurt Resale Value?

Worth thinking about honestly if it’s the only bathtub in the house and you might sell down the road — some buyers specifically look for at least one tub. If that’s a real concern for your situation, it’s a fair thing to bring up when we talk through options, and we’d rather you make that call with the full picture than find out later.

Common Questions About Tub-to-Shower Conversions

Does the drain plumbing always need to change?

Not always, but often enough that we check it directly rather than assuming — tub and shower drains don’t always meet the same code requirements, and it depends on your specific original setup.

Is this different for older homes near Old Town or Barelas?

Sometimes. Original bathroom footprints in a lot of that older housing stock tend to run smaller than what’s standard today, so layout options are more about working efficiently within the existing space than a wide-open remodel.

Do original bathrooms in Northeast Heights tract homes convert well?

Yes — a lot of those original tub-only layouts from decades back are actually good candidates, since the alcove dimensions tend to be fairly standard for the era.

Is this popular in newer homes too, like out in Rio Rancho?

Yes, sometimes purely as a lifestyle preference rather than an age or mobility reason — plenty of newer homeowners just prefer a larger shower to a tub they never use.

Can I get pricing before anything starts?

Yes, always — we’ll walk the space, talk through what’s involved, and give you a real number before any work begins.
