Kitchen Sink Installation in Albuquerque, NM

A new sink sounds simple until you’re staring at a hole in the counter that’s the wrong shape, or a faucet that no longer lines up with anything. Getting it right means matching the sink to your cabinet, your countertop, and whatever’s already plumbed underneath, not just picking one off a shelf and hoping it fits. This is one of the jobs we handle most as part of our Fixtures & Faucets work across Albuquerque, and Jonathan’s crew measures everything first so there’s no surprise cutout or return trip. Most installs are done in a single visit.

Johnathon arrived as scheduled. He had taken a diligent approach about ordering the replacement part we needed. It took a few days to get here. No one had it in stock. The part was top-of-the-line brass to replace an inexpensive cheap cartridge in our shower. Johnathon did the Job in an efficient manner and checked everything when finished to make sure it all properly functioned as designed. Our shower area was left, clean and neat As it was when he got here. Great job, Johnathon

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ J&J Plumbing deserves 5 stars! I started out thinking, “How hard can replacing a toilet be?” Famous last words. After two trips to the toilet aisle, I discovered my plumbing knowledge was about as accurate as my original guess — I needed a 10-inch rough-in, not a 12-inch! At that point, I knew I was in trouble. I called three other plumbing companies, and they all said they could maybe come out in 3–4 days. Meanwhile, my toilet was basically trying to become an indoor fountain. J&J came out quickly, ready to help, and saved me from turning a simple project into a full-blown plumbing adventure. Their advice, experience, and quick response were exactly what I needed. Great people, great service, and I’m grateful they were there before my DIY project became a “call the insurance company” story. Highly recommend J&J Plumbing!

The Sink’s Cracked, Stained, or Just Looks Its Age

Chips, deep stains, or a finish that’s worn through usually mean the sink’s past cleaning its way back to looking decent — replacing it is often cheaper than the touch-up products people try first.

You’re Already Redoing the Counters or the Cabinets

If you’re mid-remodel, this is the easiest time to change sink type, size, or mounting style. Doing it after new counters go in means cutting into a finished surface you just paid for.

The Bowl’s Too Small for How You Actually Cook

A single small bowl that can’t fit a sheet pan gets old fast if you actually cook. A lot of people upgrade to a single large basin or a offset double bowl once they realize how much counter space a bigger sink actually frees up.

You Want to Switch Bowl Types — Undermount, Farmhouse, Single vs. Double

Going from a drop-in to undermount, or adding a farmhouse apron sink, isn’t just a swap. It usually means new cutout dimensions, sometimes cabinet modifications, and different support underneath than what’s there now.

The Current Sink Is Leaking Under the Cabinet and Damaging It

Water pooling under the sink, a swollen or soft cabinet floor, or a musty smell coming from that cabinet means the leak’s been going on longer than you’ve noticed. Left alone, it keeps spreading. Treat this one as urgent — it’s the kind of thing our emergency plumbing line handles if it’s actively dripping right now.

Why the Cutout and Countertop Material Matter More Than the Sink Itself

The cutout in your countertop has to match the new sink’s dimensions almost exactly, and every sink brand and style has different specs. A sink that’s even a half inch off in either direction either won’t sit right or leaves a gap that has to be patched, and patching a countertop cutout never looks as clean as getting the size right the first time.

Countertop material changes what’s possible too. Laminate counters can usually be re-cut without much trouble. Granite, quartz, and other stone counters are a different story — cutting or enlarging a stone cutout takes specialized tools most plumbers don’t carry, and it’s a job for a countertop fabricator, not something we do as part of a standard install. We’ll tell you upfront if your project needs that step before we touch anything.

Undermount sinks add another layer, since they’re supported by clips or epoxy directly to the underside of the counter rather than resting in a cutout with a rim. That support has to be solid, or the sink shifts or drops over time, which is more common with a rushed install than people realize.

Faucet Holes, Disposals, and What Has to Line Up Underneath

Most sinks come pre-drilled for one, two, or three holes, and your existing faucet, soap dispenser, or sprayer setup has to match that hole count or you’re either patching holes or drilling new ones. Going from three holes to one, for a single-handle faucet, is common but means covering the extra holes with a deck plate, not just leaving them.

If you’re running a garbage disposal, the new sink’s drain opening and the disposal’s mounting flange have to be compatible, and older disposals sometimes don’t play well with a newer sink’s drain depth. We check that before the old sink comes out, not after, so we’re not stuck mid-install waiting on a part.

What We Actually Do During the Install

We start by measuring the existing cutout and comparing it against the new sink’s template before anything gets disconnected. That single step is what keeps a job from turning into a surprise. We disconnect the old sink, cap the lines, and check the shutoff valves while we’re under there, since a lot of older homes have valves that are original to the house and worth replacing while everything’s already apart anyway.

We set the new sink, connect the supply lines and drain, hook the disposal back up if there is one, and run water to check for leaks before we call it done. If the faucet’s changing too, that gets installed and tested at the same time so you’re not left with a functioning sink and a leaking faucet.

Older homes closer to Old Town and Barelas tend to have narrower base cabinets than what newer construction uses, and that sometimes limits which sink sizes will actually fit without cabinet work. Homes we work on out in Rio Rancho and the Westside, where cabinets tend to run more standard sizes, usually have more sink options without any modification needed. In North Valley kitchens that have already been through a remodel or two, we often find non-standard cutouts from a past DIY job, which we always double-check against the new sink before assuming a clean fit.

The mistake we see most: someone buys a sink online based on looks alone, without checking the cutout size or hole configuration against what they’ve already got, and it doesn’t fit when it shows up. We’re happy to check dimensions with you before you buy, not just after.

Things You Can Check or Measure Before We Get There

Measure your current cutout, length and width, and count how many holes are in your current sink deck. Take a look under the cabinet and note whether you’ve got a garbage disposal, since that changes what we bring.

Past that, don’t disconnect the old sink yourself if you’re not confident with the shutoff valves and drain connections — a cracked supply line or a drain trap put back together wrong turns a simple install into a leak call, and that’s not where you want to start a kitchen project.

New Sink, Same Faucet, or Time to Replace Both?

If your current faucet’s in good shape and the hole count matches, keeping it is fine and saves you money. If it’s old, mismatched to the new sink’s hole configuration, or just looking as tired as the sink was, this is the easiest time to swap it too, since everything’s already disconnected. That’s Faucet/Tap Repair & Installation work and we can knock it out in the same visit. Same goes for the garbage disposal — if it’s original to the house and already struggling, replacing it alongside the sink means one visit instead of two down the road.

If your project actually involves cutting or enlarging a stone countertop, that’s outside what we handle directly — that’s a countertop fabricator’s job, and we’ll coordinate around their timeline rather than pretend we can cut granite ourselves.

Will This Mean New Countertops Too?

Not usually. As long as the new sink’s cutout is the same size or smaller than your current one, we install into the existing counter with no fabrication needed. It’s only when you’re going bigger, or switching mounting styles entirely, that a countertop change enters the picture, and we’ll flag that before you commit to a sink that needs it.

How Long Does an Install Actually Take?

Most straightforward swaps, same cutout size, matching hole count, take a few hours, start to finish, same visit. Anything requiring a countertop modification takes longer since that’s a separate trade’s schedule, not ours, and we’ll tell you realistically what that adds before you’re stuck without a working sink longer than expected.

Frequently Asked Kitchen Sink Installation Questions

Can you install a sink I already bought?

Yes, as long as it fits your cutout or the cutout can reasonably be adjusted. Bring us the model or specs before you buy if you want to check first.

Do I need a plumber or a countertop company for a bigger sink?

Both, usually, if the cutout needs to grow and your counter is stone. We handle the plumbing side start to finish; a fabricator handles cutting the stone, and we’ll coordinate the order of work with you.

Is undermount worth the extra cost over drop-in?

Depends on your counter material and how it looks to you. Undermount looks cleaner and wipes easier, but it needs a solid countertop for support, so it’s not the right call for every setup.

Do older Nob Hill homes usually need any special work for a sink swap?

Sometimes. A lot of the older bungalows around Nob Hill have narrower cabinets and original supply lines, so we check both before quoting, rather than assuming a standard-size sink will drop right in
