Hose Bib & Outdoor Faucet Repair in Albuquerque, NM
An outdoor faucet that won’t shut off, drips constantly, or cracked over the winter is usually a quick fix, as long as whatever’s actually wrong with it gets caught before it starts leaking into the wall behind it. Hose bibs take a beating here between the freeze cycles and the sun, and most of what fails is a small, specific part, not the whole fixture. This is one of the jobs we handle regularly as part of our Fixtures & Faucets work across Albuquerque, and most repairs are done in one visit, often the same day you call.

The Hose Bib’s Dripping or Won’t Fully Shut Off
A steady drip after you’ve turned the handle all the way means the washer or seal inside has worn out and isn’t sealing against the valve seat anymore.
Water’s Leaking Inside the Wall or Ceiling Below It
If you’re seeing water damage or a damp spot indoors, near where the outdoor faucet connects, that’s a bigger problem than the faucet itself, and it usually means the leak’s happening on the indoor side of the wall, not just at the spigot.
It Cracked or Split After Winter
A cracked hose bib body, especially one that only shows up after the first hard freeze, almost always means it wasn’t a frost-free style, or a hose was left connected over the winter and trapped water inside it when it froze.
The Handle Spins But Nothing Happens
A handle that turns freely without stopping water flow usually means the stem’s stripped or disconnected from the washer assembly inside, and it needs to come apart to fix, not just tighten.
It’s Actively Spraying or Won’t Shut Off At All
If water’s spraying out and you can’t stop it by turning the handle, find the interior shutoff valve for that line, usually in the basement, crawlspace, or a nearby utility area, and shut it there. Treat this as an emergency plumbing call — an outdoor faucet that won’t shut off can run for hours before anyone notices if it’s on the side of the house you don’t walk past often.
Freeze Damage Is the Big One
A standard hose bib sits with its valve close to the outside wall, which means the part holding water freezes right along with the outdoor temperature. Water expands as it freezes, and if there’s water trapped in that section when it does, it splits the pipe or the fixture body from the inside, a crack you often don’t see until it thaws out and starts leaking. A frost-free hose bib is built differently, with the actual valve set back inside the warm part of the house, so the exposed section stays dry once it’s shut off, which is the whole reason it doesn’t crack the same way.
Leaving a hose connected to the spigot over winter is one of the most common ways we see this happen, even on frost-free units, since the attached hose keeps water sitting in the pipe instead of letting it drain out after each use the way it’s designed to.
Everyday Wear Inside the Valve
Past freeze damage, most hose bib problems come down to the washer, a rubber seal that presses against the valve seat to stop flow, wearing out from years of grit and mineral content in the water passing over it. The packing, a seal around the stem itself, wears out separately and shows up as water leaking out around the handle rather than from the spigot opening. Both are small parts, and neither one means the whole fixture needs replacing on its own.
What We Actually Do to Fix It
We start by checking whether the leak is actually in the hose bib itself or coming from a cracked section of pipe behind the wall, since those are two very different repairs. If it’s a straightforward washer or packing issue, we replace the worn part and test it under full pressure before we’re done. If the body’s cracked from freeze damage, we replace the whole unit, and this is usually the point where we’ll recommend upgrading to a frost-free style if the house doesn’t already have one, since it’s the same labor to install either type.
If the leak’s tracking back into the wall, that changes the job entirely, since we may need to access the pipe from inside rather than just swapping the exterior fixture.
Older homes closer to Old Town and Barelas often still have the original non-frost-free hose bibs from whenever the house was built, which is exactly the style most prone to freeze cracking during a hard winter. Homes we work on out in Rio Rancho and the Westside, where construction tends to be newer, more often already have frost-free hose bibs installed from the start, so freeze cracking shows up less, and most calls there are wear-related instead. In North Valley yards with a lot of established landscaping, we sometimes find hose bibs that have been slowly pulled or bent out of alignment by irrigation lines or plant growth around them over the years, which puts stress on the connection even before winter gets involved.
The mistake we see most: someone tightens the packing nut hard trying to stop a drip around the handle, and it stops the leak for a week or two before the stem strips out entirely, turning a simple washer job into a full fixture replacement.
Things You Can Check Before You Call
Find your interior shutoff valve for that line, if you have one, and confirm it actually shuts water off completely. Disconnect any hoses left attached, especially heading into colder months, since a connected hose is one of the easiest ways to turn a fine hose bib into a cracked one.
Past that, don’t take the fixture apart yourself if the leak’s tracking into the wall rather than staying at the spigot. Chasing a hidden leak without knowing exactly where the pipe runs can turn a contained repair into cutting open more wall than the job actually needs.
Replace the Washer, or Replace the Whole Bib?
If it’s just a worn washer or packing and the body’s not cracked, replacing that part is the cheaper, faster fix and holds up fine. If the body’s cracked, corroded, or it’s an old non-frost-free unit in a spot that’s cracked before, replacing the whole fixture, and upgrading to frost-free while we’re already there, saves you a repeat call next winter. If your faucet needs work indoors too, that’s separate but related work, and it’s Faucet/Tap Repair & Installation territory if you want to knock both out at once.
If the leak’s genuinely coming from inside the wall rather than the exterior fixture, that’s outside a standard hose bib repair, and it’s Leak Detection & Repair work instead, since finding a leak hidden behind a wall needs different tools than swapping a spigot.
Will This Mean Opening Up My Wall?
Not for a standard hose bib repair. If the leak’s staying at the exterior fixture, we’re working entirely outside. Opening a wall only comes up if the leak’s tracking indoors, and even then we’ll target the smallest area possible and explain exactly what we’re doing before any cutting starts.
Is a Frost-Free Hose Bib Worth the Upgrade?
Usually, yes, especially if the current one has already cracked once. It costs a bit more upfront than a standard replacement, but it’s the same visit either way, and it’s built specifically to handle the freeze cycles that caused the problem in the first place.
Frequently Asked Hose Bib Questions
Can a cracked hose bib cause damage even if I haven’t used it yet this year?
Yes. The crack happens during the freeze, but it doesn’t leak until you turn the water back on and pressurize it again, which is often the first time anyone notices.
Do I need to disconnect my hose every time I’m done watering?
For a standard hose bib, yes, especially once nights start getting cold. Frost-free units are more forgiving but still work better long-term without a hose left attached.
How long does a hose bib replacement take?
Usually under an hour for a straightforward swap. If we’re accessing it from inside a wall or dealing with a hidden leak, it takes longer, and we’ll walk you through that before starting.
Do homes around Nob Hill commonly need the frost-free upgrade?
Often, yes. A lot of the older homes around Nob Hill still have their original hose bibs, and if one’s already cracked once, it’s usually worth upgrading rather than replacing it with the same style that failed.
