Leak Detection & Slab Leaks in Albuquerque, NM
A hidden leak rarely shows up as a puddle. It shows up as a water bill that jumped, a floor that feels warm under your bare feet, or the faint sound of running water when every faucet is off. We find exactly where the water is escaping before we cut into anything, then tell you straight whether it’s a small fix or a bigger job. You get the price up front, and we’re not going to break up your floor unless the leak is actually under it.

What Do You Need?
Why Homeowners Call Us First
We Already Know What’s Wearing Out Your Line
Albuquerque’s clay-heavy soil and decades-old sewer laterals don’t give you much warning — a slow drain here, a gurgle there — before something underground actually fails. We check the line itself, not just the symptom, on every call.
We show up when we say we will.
Same-day service, a real time window, a text when we’re on the way.
Upfront pricing before any work starts.
You’ll know the cost — repair or replacement — before we touch anything.
Licensed & background-checked.
No stranger guessing their way through your yard or your home.
What Is a Slab Leak, Really?
A slab leak is a leak in a water pipe that runs in or under the concrete slab your house sits on. Plenty of Albuquerque homes are built on a slab instead of over a crawl space or basement, so the plumbing is buried in the concrete or in the gravel under it. You can’t see it, and you can’t reach it with a wrench.
The pipes in question are the pressurized supply lines, the hot and cold lines that bring water to your fixtures. A drain line under a slab is a different problem. The supply lines are the ones that keep leaking under pressure, so they waste water around the clock.
Leak detection is the other half of this. It’s the work of finding where water is escaping when you can’t see it. That can be under a slab, behind a wall, or in a line running through the yard.
What Actually Causes a Pipe Under the Slab to Leak?
Copper rubbing against its surroundings. Hot water makes a copper pipe expand a little, and it shrinks again when the water cools. If the pipe is touching rock, gravel, or rebar, that slow movement wears a spot thin over the years until it pinholes.
A bad bend or fitting from the install. A sharp bend, or a joint made under the slab during construction, can be a weak point. It might hold for fifteen years and then let go.
Water chemistry eating the pipe. Some water is harder on copper than others. Over time it can wear small pits in the pipe wall, inside or out, until one breaks through.
Ground that shifts. Clay-heavy soil swells when it’s wet and shrinks when it’s dry. The slab moves a little, and a pipe locked in it has nowhere to go.
Pressure that’s too high. Too much pressure from the street, with no working regulator, stresses every joint. If the house has a PRV, a worn one is a quiet cause of leaks under the slab.
Two metals touching. When different metals sit against each other in damp ground, one of them corrodes faster. It’s slow, and it’s easy to miss until water shows up.
How We Find a Leak We Can’t See
We start at the meter. Every faucet and appliance goes off, and we watch the leak indicator, the small dial or triangle on the meter face. If it’s still moving, water’s escaping somewhere.
Next we figure out which line it’s on. We can isolate the hot side from the cold side. A leak that stops showing when the hot water is shut off tells us it’s on the hot line, which is a common slab leak. Then we pressure-test the lines section by section to shrink the search area.
After that, we use listening equipment on the floor and ground. Water escaping under pressure makes a sound, and the right gear picks it up. We mark the spot, check it two ways, and only then do we talk about cutting.
Here’s a mistake we see a lot: people assume the leak is wherever the floor looks damp or the flooring is bubbling up. Water under a slab travels. It follows the gravel and comes up at the lowest or weakest spot, which can be several feet from the break.
Here’s what surprises people: you might not have to break the slab at all. Sometimes the best answer is to leave the bad pipe where it is and run a new line through the walls or attic. We’ll go through that choice with you.
Fix It Under the Slab, Go Around It, or Repipe?
There are three real options, and the right one depends on what we find.
Fix it under the slab. If it’s one leak on a pipe that’s otherwise in good shape, we can open a small section of the floor, repair the pipe, and patch the slab. It’s the most direct fix. It also means a mess inside the house, so we tell you before we start.
Go around it. We cap off the bad line and run a new one overhead, through the attic or walls. Nobody breaks the slab, and the old pipe is retired. It costs more than a patch, but it can be the better call if the old pipe is the problem.
Repipe. If the pipes are the same age and showing the same wear, more leaks are probably coming. A full repipe fixes the whole house instead of one spot at a time.
We won’t talk you into the biggest job. If a single repair is all you need, that’s what we’ll quote. If the pipes are failing everywhere, we’ll say so plainly, so you can compare the numbers and decide.
Slab Homes in the Northeast Heights and East Side
A lot of the homes in the Northeast Heights and on the East Side were built on slabs from the 1960s through the 1980s. That’s decades of copper pipe sitting in the ground. Homes up toward Tramway also sit on ground that slopes, which means the soil under one end of a slab can move differently from the other. When we get a call from a slab home in that part of town, we think about how old the copper is and what the ground has been doing under it. The leak itself might be small, but the pipe’s age tells us how much more of the line might be close behind.
Newer Homes on the Westside and in Rio Rancho
Out on the Westside and in Rio Rancho, the slab homes are newer, and the pipes are younger. A leak there is less likely to be old copper worn thin. It’s more often one bad fitting, a pipe that was bent wrong during construction, or pressure that was running too high. A home near Coors Blvd or Paseo del Norte might only be 15 or 20 years old and still have a slab leak, because the cause is how it was built, not how old it is. With a newer home, we’re often looking for one clear problem, and a spot repair is a real option.
Older Home in Old Town, Nob Hill, or the North Valley? It May Not Be a Slab Leak.
Many homes in Old Town, Nob Hill, and the North Valley were built before slabs became the norm, so some of them have raised floors or crawl spaces. The pipes there often run under the floor instead of inside concrete. That can make a hidden leak easier to reach, and it means “slab leak” isn’t always the right diagnosis. Near Old Town Plaza, where many homes have thick adobe walls, a slow leak next to a wall can do real damage before anyone notices. We find it first, then decide whether there’s any digging to do.
Your Water Bill Jumped and You Can’t See a Leak. Start Here.
That’s what our Leak Detection Service is for. We check the meter, isolate the lines, and use listening gear to find where the water is going. That might be a slab leak, a line in the yard, or a toilet that keeps running. We find the source and show you, so you aren’t guessing. If the leak is outside, it might fall under our Water Line Repair work. If it’s under the floor, we’ll talk you through the slab options.
Warm Floor or the Sound of Running Water? Here’s What a Slab Leak Repair Looks Like.
If we’ve confirmed a leak under the house, our Slab Leak Repair service covers the fix. We show you where the leak is and what the three options cost, so you see them side by side. Then we do the work you pick, test the lines, and check the meter again with everything off, so you know the water has stopped escaping.
Simple Things to Check Before You Call
- Do a meter test. Shut off every faucet and appliance, then check the leak indicator on the meter. If it’s moving, water’s escaping somewhere.
- Feel the floor. A warm spot on the floor when no one has been running hot water can point to a hot-line leak.
- Listen. At night, when the house is quiet, put your ear near the floor or a wall. A faint hiss or running-water sound with everything off is worth telling us about.
- Rule out the toilets. A silent toilet leak can move the meter too. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank, and if color shows up in the bowl without flushing, you’ve found it.
Past that, this isn’t a DIY job. Don’t chip at the floor or dig around to look for a pipe. You can damage the line worse, or hit something else buried in the slab.
Water Coming Up Through the Floor? Shut It Off.
If water is coming up through the floor or the leak is flooding the house, shut off the main at the house and call us. A line that’s pouring water at 2 a.m. is exactly what our 24/7 line is for.
Leak in the Yard, Not the Floor?
If your meter is moving but the problem looks like it’s outside, between the meter and the house, that’s a water line job, not a slab job. Read our Water Line Repair page for how we handle that.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have a slab leak?
Common signs are a warm spot on the floor, the sound of water running when everything’s off, a water bill that jumped, or a meter that keeps moving when nothing’s on. A meter test is the easiest first step.
Do you have to break my floor to fix a slab leak?
Not always. Sometimes we repair the pipe through a small opening in the slab. Sometimes we run a new line through the walls or attic instead. We’ll go through the options once we know where the leak is.
How can you find a leak that’s under concrete?
We isolate the hot and cold lines, test them for pressure loss, and use listening equipment on the floor to pick up the sound of escaping water. We confirm the spot before we cut anything.
Is a slab leak an emergency?
If water is coming up through the floor, yes, shut off the main and call. If it’s a slow leak, you still want it found soon, because the water keeps running and can damage the slab and flooring.
Should I repair one leak or repipe the whole house?
If the pipes are in good shape apart from one spot, a repair makes sense. If the pipes are the same age and showing the same wear, a repipe may save you repeat trips. We’ll tell you which one fits your house.
