Water Line Repair & Replacement in Albuquerque, NM
A water line problem usually shows up as a bill, not a puddle. Your water bill jumps, the shower pressure drops, or one patch of the yard stays wet when it hasn’t rained. We find where the line is actually leaking before we recommend anything. Then we tell you straight whether it’s a small repair or the line needs replacing, not the bigger job by default. You get the price up front, and most calls get done the same day.

Water Line Repair and Replacement
Why Homeowners Call Us First
We Already Know What’s Wearing Out Your Line
Albuquerque’s clay-heavy soil and decades-old sewer laterals don’t give you much warning — a slow drain here, a gurgle there — before something underground actually fails. We check the line itself, not just the symptom, on every call.
We show up when we say we will.
Same-day service, a real time window, a text when we’re on the way.
Upfront pricing before any work starts.
You’ll know the cost — repair or replacement — before we touch anything.
Licensed & background-checked.
No stranger guessing their way through your yard or your home.
Where Does Your Water Line Start, and Whose Pipe Is It?
Your water comes in through a service line. That’s the pipe that runs from the city’s main under the street, through the meter, and into your house. Find the meter box first. It’s a concrete or plastic lid set in the ground, usually near the curb or the edge of the property.
The meter is the city’s. The pipe from the meter to your house is generally yours to maintain. So if the leak is on the house side of the meter, it’s on you, and that’s where we work.
You also want to know where your main shutoff is. Most houses have one at the meter and one near where the line enters the house. Find them now, while nothing’s wrong. Finding a shutoff valve while water is pouring across the garage floor is a bad time to learn where it is.
What Actually Causes a Water Line to Leak or Lose Pressure?
Old galvanized pipe rusting from the inside. Galvanized steel was common in older homes. Over decades it builds up rust and mineral scale on the inside wall. The opening gets smaller every year, and your pressure drops with it. Eventually the pipe rusts through and starts to leak.
Pinhole leaks in copper. Copper lasts a long time, but water chemistry and soil conditions can wear tiny holes in it from the outside or the inside. A pinhole can leak for months before anyone sees it, and your meter is usually the first thing to show it.
Pressure that’s too high. Your house should have a pressure reducing valve, or PRV, that tames the pressure coming in off the main. When a PRV wears out, every joint and fitting in the house takes extra force. Water hammer, that bang you hear when a faucet shuts off fast, is one sign of it. Over time it can split a fitting.
Cold snaps on a shallow line. Albuquerque gets real freezes, and a line buried too shallow or running through an exposed spot can freeze and crack. You often don’t find out until the thaw.
Ground that moves and weight on top. Clay-heavy soil swells and shrinks as it gets wet and dries out. A driveway, a parked truck, or a new patio over the line adds weight. Over the years, the pipe gets pushed and stressed at its joints.
Bad fittings and old plastic. Some homes built from the late 1970s into the mid-1990s have gray polybutylene pipe. It’s known for failing at the fittings. Even in newer homes, one poorly made joint can let go years later.
How We Find the Leak Without Tearing Up Your Yard
We start at the meter. We shut off every fixture, then watch the leak indicator, the small dial or triangle on the meter face. If it’s still moving with everything off, water’s going somewhere it shouldn’t.
Next we check your pressure with a gauge on a hose bib. Then we use listening equipment to pick up the sound of water escaping, and we trace the path of the line to narrow it down. Only after that do we dig, and we dig in one spot, not five.
Here’s the mistake we see a lot: people dig where the ground is wet. But water travels. It follows the pipe, or the gravel around it, and comes up somewhere else. The wet spot can sit 10 feet or more from the real break.
Here’s what surprises people: a leaking line doesn’t always leave a wet yard. Sandy soil can swallow a lot of water and show nothing on top. So a dry yard doesn’t mean a healthy line. Your meter and your bill tell the truth.
Repair the Section, or Replace the Whole Line?
A leak in one spot on an otherwise good line is usually a spot repair. We dig down to it, cut out the bad piece, and put in a new section. Done right, it can last for decades.
Replacement is a different conversation. If the line has leaked in more than one place, the rest of it is usually the same age and in the same shape. Another spot repair then just buys a few months. The same goes for galvanized pipe that’s rusted shut inside, or a line that was never buried deep enough.
We’ll tell you which one it is, and why. If a repair is the right fix, we won’t talk you into a replacement. If the line is done, we won’t patch it and send you a new bill in March.
For some situations we can also replace a line with less digging than a full trench. It depends on the ground, the access, and how far the line runs. We’ll tell you if it fits your property.
Old House Near Old Town, Barelas, or Downtown? Check What Your Line Is Made Of.
A lot of homes around Old Town, Barelas, and Downtown were built well before modern pipe. Many have had repairs over the years, so the line in the ground can be a mix: some original steel, some copper, maybe a patch of something newer. Those mixed lines can corrode where different metals meet. When we’re called to a home near Old Town Plaza or along 4th Street, the first question is what the line is made of. We don’t assume.
Low Pressure in the Northeast Heights, Westside, and Rio Rancho: Check the PRV First
Albuquerque slopes up toward the Sandia Mountains, and water pressure can run different from one street to the next depending on where your house sits on that slope. In the Northeast Heights, a high-pressure street with a worn PRV is hard on every fitting in the house.
Out on the Westside and in Rio Rancho, the homes are newer, often built with PEX or copper. A water line problem there is less often a rotted pipe. It’s more likely a pressure problem or a fitting that was put in wrong. If you’re past Coors Blvd and the pressure feels off, the PRV is where we look first.
Big Lot, Long Run: Water Lines in the North Valley, Los Ranchos, and Corrales
Homes in the North Valley and Los Ranchos often sit on bigger lots, set well back from the street. In Corrales it’s common too. That means a longer water line from the meter to the house, with more pipe and more joints to go wrong. It also means more yard that might be wet for other reasons. Valley properties often have irrigation running, so a damp patch doesn’t always point to the water line. We check the meter before we touch a shovel.
Need a New Main Line or a Shutoff That Won’t Shut Off?
Sometimes you don’t have a leak. You need a new line, or a better setup on the line you have. That’s what our Main Water Line Services cover.
- A new service line from the meter to your house
- Replacing a main shutoff valve that’s stuck, leaking, or won’t close all the way
- Installing or swapping a PRV so your pressure is steady
- Connecting a new line to existing plumbing
Older shutoff valves can seize. If you turn yours once a year and it won’t budge, that’s worth fixing before you need it in a hurry.
Leak, Low Pressure, or Rusty Water: What the Fix Looks Like
If your line is leaking or the pressure has been bad for a while, our Water Line Repair & Replacement service is where it lands. Here’s the plain version. We find the leak, show you where it is, and give you the price for the spot repair. If the line needs more than that, we explain why and give you that price too, so you can compare. After the work, we test it and check the meter again with everything off, so you know the line is holding.
Simple Things to Check Before You Call
- Do a meter test. Turn off every faucet and appliance, then check the leak indicator on the meter. If it’s moving, water’s escaping somewhere.
- Rule out the toilets. A silent toilet leak can move the meter too. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If color shows up in the bowl without flushing, you’ve got your answer.
- Look at the yard. Wet spots, a patch of extra-green grass, or soft ground along the path from the meter to the house can show a leak.
- Find your shutoff valves. Know where they are before you need them.
Past that, this isn’t a DIY job. Don’t dig around the line yourself. You can hit a gas or electric line, or break the pipe worse than it was. Call 811 before anyone digs anywhere on the property.
Water Line Burst and Flooding? Shut It Off First.
If a line breaks and water’s running, shut off the main at the house. Then call us. A burst line at 2 a.m. is exactly what our 24/7 line is for.
Wet Yard, But Not Sure It’s the Water Line?
A wet spot isn’t always a water line. Sometimes it’s runoff, or a drainage problem, and that’s a different fix. If the meter test comes back clean and the yard’s still soggy, take a look at our Drainage Service page.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have a water line leak?
Check your meter with everything in the house turned off. If it keeps moving, water’s leaking somewhere. A bill that jumps with no change in how much you use is another sign.
Is the water line my responsibility or the city’s?
Generally, the city handles the main and the meter. The pipe from the meter to your house is usually yours. We’ll help you sort out where the leak sits.
Can a water line leak without any water showing in my yard?
Yes. Sandy soil can soak up a lot of water, and a leak can run underground for months. The meter and your bill are the best clues.
Do I need to replace the whole line or just fix the leak?
It depends on how many leaks there are and what the pipe is made of. One leak on a good line is often a spot repair. A line with damage in several places usually needs replacing. We’ll explain which one it is.
Should I replace old galvanized pipe even if it isn’t leaking?
Not always right away. But if you have low pressure or rusty water, the pipe is closing up inside. We’ll look at it and tell you honestly where it stands.
