Sewer Backup Repair in Albuquerque, NM

Sewage backing up into your house isn’t something you wait out — it’s a health hazard the second it touches a floor or a tub. Most backups trace to a blocked or damaged main line, not the fixture you happen to notice it at first, and figuring out which one fast is what keeps a bad afternoon from turning into a bigger mess. This is one of the calls we treat as top priority under our emergency plumbing work, and Jonathan’s crew answers day or night, because sewage on a floor doesn’t wait for business hours. Tell us what you’re seeing and we’ll walk you through

Water Backs Up in the Tub or Shower When You Flush the Toilet

That’s a classic sign the main line’s blocked somewhere past where those drains connect — the toilet’s pushing water into a pipe that’s already full, and it’s finding the next lowest opening instead of going anywhere useful.

Multiple Drains Are Slow or Gurgling at Once

One slow drain is usually local to that fixture. Several drains acting up together, especially with a gurgling sound as water goes down, points to something blocking the shared line all of them feed into.

Sewage Smell Coming from Drains or the Yard

A sewer smell inside usually means a dry trap or a venting problem. A sewer smell outside, especially near a wet or soggy patch of yard, can mean the line’s actually broken underground and leaking before it ever gets that far.

The Lowest Drain in the House Backs Up First

If you’ve got a basement floor drain or a laundry standpipe that’s the first thing to back up, that’s not a coincidence — it’s the lowest point in your plumbing, and it’s usually the first place a full main line shows itself.

Sewage Is Actually Coming Up Through a Drain or Toilet

Stop using every drain in the house right now — no flushing, no running water, no laundry. Every bit of water you send down adds to what’s already backing up. This is the one situation on this page you shouldn’t wait on: treat it as an emergency plumbing call and get someone headed your way immediately.

Sewer Backup Repair in Albuquerque, NM

Why Sewage Backs Up Instead of Draining

Tree roots are the biggest cause we see across the city. Roots find their way into old clay or cast iron sewer lines through the smallest crack in a joint, and once they’re in, they grow into a dense mat that catches paper and grease until the line’s nearly closed off. This shows up constantly in North Valley, where mature trees along the older streets have had fifty, sixty years to find their way into the pipe underneath them.

Grease and paper buildup does the same thing over time without any roots involved — grease coats the inside of the pipe like the inside of a dirty pan, and paper or wipes catch on that coating instead of sliding through, until the opening’s narrowed down to almost nothing.

Sometimes the pipe itself is the problem. Older clay lines can crack or shift over decades of ground movement, and once a section’s cracked or bellied — meaning it’s sunk and created a low spot that holds standing water and waste instead of letting it flow through — that low spot collects solids every single time, and it’ll keep backing up no matter how many times you clear it.

Once in a while it’s not your line at all — a blockage in the city’s main can back up into every house connected to it. That’s rare, but it’s why we always check where your line ties into the street before assuming the problem’s entirely on your property.

New Construction/Rough-In Plumbing in Albuquerque, NM

What We Actually Do When We Get There

We start by running a camera down the cleanout, the capped pipe usually near the edge of your yard or foundation, so we can see exactly what’s blocking the line before we touch anything. Guessing and snaking blind on a sewage backup just means doing the job twice.

If it’s grease, paper, or general buildup, a straight snake usually clears it same visit. If it’s roots or heavier buildup, hydro jetting, using high-pressure water to blast the inside of the pipe clean instead of just punching a hole through the clog, does a more complete job and buys you more time before it happens again. If the camera shows a cracked or bellied section of pipe, snaking or jetting won’t fix that permanently. That’s a pipe repair, not a clog, and we’ll show you the footage so you’re seeing exactly what we’re seeing, not just taking our word for it.

We check homes in older parts of the city, closer to Barelas and Old Town, differently than newer construction. A lot of that housing stock still runs on original clay lines that have had seventy or eighty years to develop cracks and root intrusion, so we’re often not surprised to find root damage even in a house that’s never had a backup before. Out toward Rio Rancho, where a lot of the sewer infrastructure is newer, we see fewer root and cracked-pipe issues and more straightforward buildup clogs — usually a faster, simpler fix.

The mistake we see most: someone snakes the line themselves or pays for a quick clear, and the backup returns in a few months because whatever was actually catching the debris, roots, a belly in the pipe, never got addressed. Clearing the symptom without checking the cause is why the same house calls again and again.

Simple Things You Can Check Before We Get There

Stop using water in the house entirely — no flushing, no dishwasher, no laundry, nothing down any drain. Find your main shutoff if the backup’s bad enough that you want to stop all water use at the source while you wait.

Past that, this isn’t a DIY situation. Sewage backups carry real health risk, and running a snake or a drain cleaner into standing sewage without knowing what’s actually blocking the line can make the mess bigger, not smaller. Leave the line itself to us.

Clear It, or Fix What’s Actually Broken?

If the camera shows buildup, roots sitting in an otherwise sound pipe, clearing the line solves it, and a jetting service now can keep it clear a lot longer than a basic snake. If the camera shows a cracked, collapsed, or bellied section, that section needs actual repair or replacement, not another round of clearing — that’s Sewer Line Repair work, and we’ll walk you through what that looks like before committing to anything. If it’s a recurring buildup problem across several drains rather than a full backup, Clogged Main Line Cleaning on a maintenance schedule is sometimes the better long-term answer than waiting for the next emergency call.

If the backup is isolated to one toilet and nothing else in the house is affected, that’s a different, smaller problem — Overflowing Toilet Repair covers that. And if your home runs on a septic tank rather than city sewer, that’s a different system entirely with different failure points; that falls under Septic System Service, not a standard sewer backup call.

Is It Safe to Stay in the House While This Gets Fixed?

Usually, yes, as long as you’re staying away from the affected area and not using water anywhere in the house. Sewage contact itself is the real risk, not being in the building — keep kids and pets away from any standing water and you’re fine waiting for us.

Will This Mean Digging Up My Yard?

Only if the camera shows a section of pipe that’s actually broken, not just blocked. Clearing a clog, even a root clog, doesn’t require digging. Repairing a collapsed or badly cracked section sometimes does, and if that’s the case, we’ll show you the footage and explain exactly what’s involved before any digging starts.

Frequently Asked Sewer Backup Questions

How do I know if it’s my line or the city’s main?

If it’s just your house and nobody around you is having the same problem, it’s almost always your line. A city main issue usually affects several homes on the same block at once.

Can I use bleach or a drain cleaner to help while I wait?

No. Pouring anything into an already-backed-up line just adds to standing waste and doesn’t reach whatever’s actually blocking it further down.

Does homeowners insurance cover sewer backup damage?

Sometimes, depending on your policy and whether you’ve got a sewer backup rider. Worth a call to your insurer, since it’s not always included by default.

Why does this keep happening at my house in South Valley but not my neighbor’s?

Older sections of South Valley still have original clay lines in a lot of homes, and pipe age and condition varies house to house even on the same street — one line can be root-free while the one two doors down is already compromised.
